Bread & Beyond: Empowering Lives Through Nutrition and Entrepreneurship
On February 25, 2025, the Rotaract Club of Arellano University (RAC AU) spearheaded the Bread & Beyond: Uniting Nutrition, Care, and Empowerment initiative at the Brgy. Dolores Covered Court in Taytay, Rizal. Designed to address both nutritional deficiencies and economic challenges, the project empowered individuals—especially mothers—by equipping them with the skills to produce fortified bread, particularly Nutribun. More than a nutrition-focused effort, the initiative also introduced participants to small-scale baking enterprises, creating pathways for financial independence and sustainable livelihoods.
A Day of Learning, Movement, and Community
One of the initiative's most significant achievements was empowering 50 mothers with practical baking skills and essential business knowledge. Participants not only learned how to make nutritious Nutribuns but also explored entrepreneurship as a means to support their families.
For organizers and volunteers, the enthusiasm of the participants was truly inspiring. Angela Catanyag shared how the dedication of the mothers exceeded expectations, demonstrating their eagerness to learn and grow. Even beyond the baking workshop, the energy of the event was contagious—Xasha Pesnesa noted how the Zumba session brought unexpected joy, with participants dancing enthusiastically regardless of the song choices. It was a heartwarming sight to see individuals of all ages moving, laughing, and embracing the moment together.
Transforming Lives Through Opportunity
The event was more than just a baking workshop—it became a stepping stone for new aspirations and opportunities.
Khate Madera observed that participants benefited in multiple ways, whether by developing a new hobby, discovering a potential livelihood, or gaining knowledge they could share with others.
Faith Villanda highlighted how the workshop ignited motivation in many, inspiring them to start their own small baking businesses.
Ms. Myrna, a participant, had always dreamed of opening a bakery but never knew where to begin. After attending the workshop, she felt empowered to take her first steps.
Similarly, Ms. Eleonor saw baking not just as a passion, but also as a way to support her family.
These stories reflect the true impact of the initiative—giving participants not just skills, but also the confidence to build better futures.
Overcoming Challenges Through Teamwork
The success of Bread & Beyond would not have been possible without the dedication of volunteers from Kabalikat sa Buhay (KSB) and RAC AU. They played a crucial role in:
1. Managing supplies
2. Setting up the venue
3. Ensuring smooth coordination
Of course, every community project comes with its challenges. The team faced hurdles such as incorrect baking supplies and difficulty sourcing malunggay flakes—key ingredients for enhancing the nutritional value of the Nutribun. However, their quick problem-solving and adaptability allowed them to improvise with malunggay powder, ensuring that the event proceeded smoothly.
These moments reinforced the importance of resilience, flexibility, and teamwork in community-driven initiatives.
Gratitude to Volunteers and Sponsors
For volunteers, seeing the participants, especially older individuals, learning new skills and proudly presenting their freshly baked bread was deeply rewarding.
Khate Madera expressed how fulfilling it was to witness their pride and sense of accomplishment.
Danica Sumook extended sincere gratitude to Smile Pilipinas, Rotary Club of Makati Dasmariñas, and all donors, whose generosity made this initiative possible. Their commitment to uplifting communities helped create lasting change for the participants.
Looking Ahead: Sustainability and Future Growth
Danica Sumook emphasized the importance of making economic projects like Bread & Beyond sustainable and inclusive. She suggested:
1. Expanding livelihood training programs to reach more communities.
2. Collaborating with local businesses to create long-term employment opportunities.
3. Conducting regular community needs assessments to improve future initiatives.
By strengthening these aspects, the project can continue its mission beyond a single event, fostering long-term impact.
Leadership and Acknowledgment
The event's success was also a result of strong leadership and mentorship:
Rotarian Diane Zoleta delivered a marketing strategies talk, helping participants understand customer engagement and business growth.
Club Adviser Samantha De Vera skillfully balanced multiple responsibilities, ensuring the event ran seamlessly.
Ma’am Beth Suarez provided clear guidance, ensuring that both volunteers and participants felt supported throughout the day.
The Kabalikat sa Buhay (KSB) volunteers played a vital role in logistics, supply management, and creating an encouraging atmosphere.
Their collective efforts empowered participants not just with skills, but also with a sense of confidence and community support.
Reflection: A Lasting Impact on the Community
For Isabela Nagutom, the true impact of Bread & Beyond goes beyond baking—it strengthens community bonds, financial security, and local economies. By equipping individuals with both skills and confidence, it paves the way for sustainable change.
Norayna Demaro also highlighted how the event aligns with RCMD’s mission of empowering mothers through professional development. More than just learning how to bake, participants gained a renewed sense of purpose, care capabilities, and entrepreneurial drive.
Conclusion: More Than Just Bread—A Catalyst for Change
Bread & Beyond was not just an event—it was a movement toward empowerment, sustainability, and community resilience.
It demonstrated that even simple initiatives can transform lives by addressing nutrition and economic challenges simultaneously.
Through skill-sharing, mentorship, and collaboration, this initiative planted the seeds for a stronger, more self-sufficient future—one baking tray at a time.
As the program continues to evolve, one thing is certain: Bread & Beyond is only the beginning.
